Tributes to Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday

John Pizzarelli & The Cleveland Jazz Orchestra Salute Frank Sinatra with Special Guest Nnenna Freelon

Friday, April 18, 2008
8 p.m.
Allen Theatre at Playhouse Square
1501 Euclid Avenue
Cleveland, OH

                                  John Pizzarelli
The cool jazz flavor of the internationally renowned jazz guitarist and vocalist John Pizzarelli is the perfect complement to the lifetime work of legendary singer Frank Sinatra. One of the most accomplished interpreters of the Great American Songbook, Pizzarelli recaps Sinatra’s multi-decade career.  A frequent opener for old blue eyes during the singer’s European tours, the two singers shared a fundamental rhythmic confidence. A connoisseur of songs, master guitarist, and storyteller all rolled into one, Pizzarelli shares classic standards and ballads with a new generation ready to swing and swoon. The New York Times say of Pizzarelli, “The harder he swings, the better he sounds.”

                                      Nnenna Freelon
Opening the set is six time Grammy nominee Nnenna Freelon as she emulates the spirit of the great “Lady Day,” Billie Holiday. Freelon pays homage to Holiday in what would have been her 90th year with a moving contemporary salute to the refreshingly distinctive sound of the legendary singer.
